"Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" A Non-Spoiler Review

Updated: Mar 2, 2020

This is a neat review about the most recent Star Wars sequel. It offers a non-spoiler approach.

"The Rise of Skywalker", directed by J.J. Abrams, is the most recent Star Wars movie, it is the final part of the sequel trilogy as well as the last instalment of the whole Star Wars saga. It is the ninth Star Wars film excluding any spin-offs. Though it's hard for me to say, I didn't like this movie and I think it is one of the worst Star Wars movies ever.

The entire story is about Rey, Finn, Poe and Chewbacca. They have to defeat Emperor Palpatine, who has resurrected himself. In my opinion, bringing Palpatine back to life was a terrible idea. It ruins Anakin Skywalker’s story, who in the end returned to the light side and sacrificed himself to kill the Emperor. Palpatine was the main villain in six movies, so in turn what Anakin did, was an extremely important event. And now, Disney, who bought the Star Wars franchise, brought the Emperor Palpatine back. Disney produced the three most recent Star Wars films. In the seventh and eighth episodes, Palpatine wasn't even mentioned, so I think that making him the super villain, who wants to destroy the whole galaxy was simply a terrible idea. In "The Rise of Skywalker" he also makes rather foolish and illogical decisions, which stem predominantly from very badly written scenes. Though, Emperor aside the movie still has its fair share of flaws.

For one, the action progresses way too fast. Most of the time the main heroes are continuously fighting. Leaving little to no time for any relationships to develop between heroes. The potential of these characters was unfortunately wasted. Another thing which I disliked was the reversal of important moments. There were several instances where something very shocking happened, and sometime after it it turned out that this situation had actually been fake. Additionally, in my opinion the worst moments in the movie were probably the emotional scenes due to them looking funny and generally unrealistic. People in the cinema that I was in were literally crying with laughter at these scenes which I am sure was not the intention. Contrastingly, the best aspect of the whole movie is how it visually looks. The colours and locations are stunning, but this said, they are beautiful in every one of the Star Wars movies. Another positive is of course the film’s music, created by John Williams. Once again it didn't disappoint as always in Star Wars. Also, the actors did a great job in their different roles. I especially appreciated Adam Driver's acting in his portrayal of Ben Solo alternatively known as Kylo Ren.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe that the beforementioned pluses are significant enough to overcome the huge flaws in this film. I think that "The Rise of Skywalker" is the worst Star Wars movie that Disney has ever made. I have enjoyed watching each and every Star Wars movie until now. I even liked "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", which a lot of people hated. In conclusion, I'm disappointed that the whole Star Wars saga has such an anticlimactic ending, because I have been such a big fan for so many years.
